“And what am I to make of this?” Kaveh breathes now. Those few words are enough to blow away the memory and reintroduce Alhaitham to the present. Kaveh presses his forehead against Alhaitham’s as if that will help him peer into his mind. The touch brings Kaveh’s persuasive mouth tantalizingly close. “I told you not to wait up for me, and yet I return to find you asleep on the divan. We both know you would much rather be in your own bed.”Kaveh’s eyes glimmer in the low lamp light like marble cracked open, his expression nearly accusatory. It is as if he is daring Alhaitham to refute every piece of evidence he has apparently gathered from the moment he walked in and discovered him on the couch. Or perhaps he is daring Alhaitham to make an excuse and retreat to the comfort of his room, putting space between them once more — but Alhaitham does not. He chooses to return the challenge, steadfast and defiant, pupil to pupil. They remain just like that for one moment — then two — neither quite willing to yield.“Do not flatter yourself,” Alhaitham eventually sighs, head falling back until it knocks against the wooden frame of the couch. His stare becomes half-lidded at this angle, and the new perspective makes all too obvious the way Kaveh’s eyes flit down the length of his exposed throat. Other than this, Alhaitham makes no move to lessen their proximity. “You know that I will occasionally lose track of time.”“Interesting how those occasions seem to coincide with the evenings I spend outside of the house.”
